Property owners: tax planning guide and checklist
YOUR WPR PLANNING STARTING POINT
Find a starting point for the tax questions that arise when you buy, let, transfer or sell property, whether you own it personally, jointly or through a company.
Your planning checklist
Use these questions to organise your facts and prepare for a discussion with your adviser.
- Record who owns each property, the ownership shares, purchase costs and borrowing.
- Separate your home, long-term rentals, holiday accommodation and development activity.
- Keep records of rent, expenses, finance costs and capital improvements.
- Compare the tax and wider costs of personal, joint and company ownership before restructuring.
- Before selling or gifting, review occupation history, valuations, available reliefs and reporting dates.
- Consider the inheritance tax and family consequences of ownership changes.
- For overseas owners or overseas property, include both countries and the relevant treaty in your review.
