My Emigration
Well, after years of researching and writing on overseas and offshore tax issues I've finally decided to take my own advice and emigrate. Like most emigrants tax is only a part of my reason to leave the UK. Sure I don't like the UK's personal tax rates but for me the general deterioration in society was a more pressing concern particularly for my children.
In terms of my tax status I'll be severing all ties with the UK. This means I'll be losing UK tax residence, ceasing any UK trading activities and closing my UK company. This will then make sure I have no UK future tax liabilities aside from Inheritance tax, but hopefully this by that time I'll have established non UK domicile status anyway.
Deciding where to go has been a bit tricky as I need a home base for the family. I've bought a villa in Spain but will be also splitting time between Malta and Cyprus making sure I avoid local taxes. I've covered some of the recent changes to the UK residence position in this article
Pretty exciting times ahead! I'll keep this blog updated with how it's all progressing.
