When to elect for remittance basis on overseas capital gain

As a non UK domiciliary you could choose to be taxed either on the remittance or arising basis. If you opt for the remittance basis you may be subject to the annual £30,000 tax charge. In this case at what level of overseas capital gain would it be worthwhile claiming the remittance basis & paying the charge? If you have overseas capital gain the breakeven point above which you would be better off paying the £30K charge would be £176,267. This is calculated as: £30,000 *100/18 = £166,667. In addition the annual exemption of £9,600 would be lost by claiming the remittance basis. This therefore totals £176,267. Note that what we're looking at here is not an overseas capital gain of £176,267 but an overseas UNREMITTED capital gain of £176,267.
