Non UK Domiciliaries investing overseas

Because many non doms will have to pay a heavy price for using the remittance basis, deferring income until you leave the country and become non-resident could be an attractive strategy. If you don't earn any income or capital gains you don't have anything to fear from either the remittance basis or the arising basis. Also don't forget the £2,000 small income exemption. Providing any overseas investments generate less than £2,000 in income or capital gains the remittance basis can be used to retain the income overseas without it being taxed. Ideally you'd then be looking to sell the investments after you've left the UK free of UK capital gains tax. Using offshore bonds could be useful here. See our article on Offshore Bonds for Non Doms
